Groundwork Prince’s Trust Team Leaders Adeel (Oldham Team Leader) and Safia (Bolton Team Leader) recently attended The Prince’s Trust North West conference for Team Leaders. Here’s a short summary of the day from Adeel…
During our time at the Prince’s Trust conference we attended a number of different workshops being held. Before this Chris Hammond, North West Prince’s Trust Manager, did an introduction of the day. He also gave us some impressive statistics of the team programme which are:
In 2012-2013 the retention of volunteers on Team programme was 78%. Positive outcomes were 68% and in the North West we worked with 1,930 young people.
One of the workshops I attended was based around literacy and numeracy and how we as Team Leaders implement that in our Team programme. One ice breaker game which I found really good was you have to say your name and an adjective that starts with the first letter of your name, so it’s similar to name animal action. So for example mine was “my name is Adeel and I am astonishing”. It seemed to work well as the other Team Leaders really enjoyed it. It was a way of making us Team Leaders see how we can implement literacy in our delivery.
We next did an activity around numeracy, and for this we had to act as young people and see where we use numeracy skills on a daily basis. With this we discussed everything from going to the shops, buying lunches, mobile phones top ups, shopping, bus passes, tram tickets etc. This was a useful activity to do with Teams to show them how they use numeracy every day.
There was also time to do some networking with other delivery partners and other Team Leaders. This was a very useful aspect of the day as we got the chance to chat about different approaches and techniques.
All in all a good day with some useful information that I can apply with my own teams and share with my fellow Team Leaders.
