Corporate volunteers on the Team programme

Linking in with our previous post from employed volunteer Jim, below is another guest blog from Katy at The Prince’s Trust. If your organisation is keen to support local unemployed young people then read on to find out how you can get involved.

KatyMy name is Katy Driver and I am responsible for organising corporate volunteers to help on all the Prince’s Trust programmes. Corporate volunteers at The Prince’s Trust are employees of our patrons providing short to long-term voluntary support to our programmes. The corporate volunteers engage in voluntary activity on behalf of their employer.

One way that corporate volunteers can be of benefit to the Team programme at Groundwork is in week 9 where they can help young people to understand what a great CV looks like and support them to write their own. They can also help with mock interviews with young people to increase their confidence as they prepare for their next steps following the Team programme.

The volunteers are provided with session plans and resources designed by the Trust to run alongside the young people’s Individual Learning Plans. The volunteers are all briefed before the session and then they have a few weeks to ask any more questions and get the logistics of the day finalised. The volunteers will run the whole day but Groundwork staff are expected to be around just to help with Team tasks and any behavioural issues that may arise!

Having the volunteers in can be a really beneficial experience for the young people.  There are normally 2-3 volunteers that come along to help. The young people enjoy new faces and it’s a chance for them to chat to the volunteers about their current jobs, previous jobs and to hear anecdotes from the volunteers about their working life. A lot of the volunteers work in recruitment or similar fields so have valuable information that they can pass on to the young people to help them once the programme finishes.

It’s not just help with CV and Interview skills that the corporate volunteers can offer. Throughout the 12 weeks there are also workshops that they can deliver on ‘Finding a Work Placement’ or they can offer a ‘World of Work’ tour where they invite the young people to their work office and give them a tour of all the departments and help them with CV/Interview skills.
