Changing Lives: Job success for Prince’s Trust Team member Emma

23 year old Emma was unemployed and low on confidence before joining a Rochdale Prince’s Trust Team earlier this year. Three months after successfully completing the Team programme Emma is now employed as a support worker and is planning for the future. Here’s Emma’s story in her own words.

Emma1

I was always stuck at home taking care of my mother and sister, looking for job but not getting anywhere. I was feeling very depressed, low, not really wanting to do anything and regularly gave up on a lot of things. I didn’t want to be around friends, I found it hard to make new friends and get out of the house. I was so low and really didn’t want to do anything.

I saw that Groundwork was recruiting for places on the Prince’s Trust Team programme. I was a little scared at first to try it out but thought I should do it – not only for myself but also for my family to make them proud of me and give my mother and sister some independence.

Groundwork and the Team programme impacted on my life because they supported me when I needed it. The Team programme helped me improve my confidence, I got to make new friends, some of whom I still keep in touch with. On the residential week I tried some new activities and overcame some of my fears. I did an excellent work placement and got an exemplary reference. I took a step back from family life and learned to gain some independence. My team leader and other members of the team regularly advised me to live my life like any other any other 22 year old and I appreciated their advice.

I’ve recently gained employment as a support worker, and even though it is now 3 months after the team programme ended I’m confident that this is a direct result of what I achieved on the Prince’s Trust Team at Groundwork. I have now got more confidence and received an excellent reference from my Team Leader Nicholas.

I am now working which mean’s I am able to learn to drive and I want to save up to buy a car which will increase my independence. I’m extremely happy with my current employment situation as I had been unemployed for 12 months prior to joining the Team programme. I am extremely grateful that I was given the opportunity to volunteer with Groundwork and I’m certain that this has given me the confidence to apply for my current job.

I would recommend the Team programme to other people and friends because it helps you improve your life. You will gain a lot of skills, improve your C.V. and more importantly get you into a routine of getting up early which is vital to any employer.

The next Prince’s Trust Team in Rochdale will start on Monday 9th September. If you would like more information on the Team programme run by Groundwork Oldham & Rochdale or would like to join the next Team contact Jill Eckersley on 0161 624 1444 or 07739 978 794.
